West African Examinations Council (WAEC)
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) was established in 1952 with the responsibility to determine examinations required in the public interest in West African Countries and empowered to conduct such examinations and award appropriate certificates. This body exists in five countries; Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra-Leone, Gambia and Liberia. The most popular Examinations conducted by WAEC are The West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE/SSCE) and The General Certificate Examination (GCE).
Over a million (1,000,000) candidates register to write the WASSCE/GCE E in Nigeria every year. Due to its large and widely distributed number of candidates, WAEC Nigeria was faced with the challenge of getting all results of its candidates marked with minimal errors and sent to the various schools at the same time. It was also faced with the challenge of having candidates pooling at its various zonal offices for result verification hereby increasing the risk of travelling.
Fleet Technologies Limited (then E-Banking Group of former Fountain Trust Bank), in June 2002 proposed the WAEC Direct Online Result Checker to WAEC, Nigeria. This is an online portal accessible to all WAEC candidates who have written the WASSCE (both May/June and November/December) to check their results with the use of a WAECDirect scratch card that conceals a PIN (Personal Identification Number) required to access the service.
This solution has created a convenient result checking process for all WASSCE candidates, with minimized travelling risks as the candidates can access the portal from anywhere in the world. It has also helped reduced human errors in computation of the results and time wastage in accessing it.
Following the successful online result checking solution provided for WAEC Nigeria, WAEC Ghana signed agreement with Fleet Technologies Limited in 2004 to implement Online Result Checker, Online Registration and Online Result Verification solutions. These solutions have enabled WASSCE candidates to check their results online and register for their examinations online at their. The Result Verification solution also enables universities/institutions authenticate results of students applying for admissions.
WAEC Sierra Leone joined WAEC Nigeria and Ghana by launching its Online Result Checker with its online registration and verification services.
